Today is Twelfth Night (the 12th day after Christmas) or the Epiphany, which, as explained on Wikipedia, is the “Christian feast intended to celebrate the “shining forth” or revelation of God in human form, to the Gentiles, in the person of Jesus. Some Christians commemorate the visitation of the Magi to the child Jesus on this day, while others use the day to commemorate the baptism of Jesus as an adult.” Also, “in Rome, Epiphania was transformed into Befana, the great fair held at that season, when sigillaria of terracotta or baked pastry were sold (Macrobius I, x, xxiv; II, xlix).” It is also the start of the Mardi Gras season!
So, a time for celebrating, for festivities, for reflection and delight.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t feeling any of that today. When I went on my cleaning rampage yesterday I unleashed dust and dust mites all over the place – on the sofa and my bed. The vacuum didn’t pick it all up. So, when I got home last night from 23 Hoyt, I was completely congested. My sinuses absolutely hurt. I couldn’t breathe. I fell asleep, finally, at around 3:00 a.m. and didn’t really sleep soundly, waking up at 6:00 a.m. I couldn’t go back to sleep after that. So I wrote a short story.
I wanted to go to church at 11:00 a.m. and then on to a Sweet Briar College allumnae luncheon, but I was too wiped out. I suffered all day with complete congestion here. I’ve had two 12-hour Claritan-D pills in the past 24 hours, and they haven’t hardly helped. It’s pretty agonizing. I missed my bed back home in Virginia! My parents have purified air throughout their home. The air is cool upstairs with wooden floors everywhere, so no gross carpeting to collect dirt, dust, viruses, bacteria, dust mites… I slept like a baby in my old room, uninterrupted for ten plus hours. It was like I was making up for the year of crap sleep in the northwest – I can’t take the carpeting here and the mold in the northwest. I am praying my doctor’s appointment on the 23rd with the allergist will provide me with some comfort!
Meantime, I edited my short story, made lunch – a baked potato with black bean chili, sour cream, red and orange bell pepper, white onion and cheese. And then I kept returning to this great vacation website that I’m now obsessed with – it’s Kelea Surf Spa vacations for women – with vacation packages set in Hawaii or Costa Rica. I keep fantasizing about going there with my gal pals – beautiful place, you learn how to surf from cool women instructors, eat delicious, healthy food, partake in other fun activities like yoga, hiking, power walking on the beach, and you get a spa treatment in your vacation package. I’m wondering if there are cabana boys! In any case, I haven’t been on a real vacation in forever! I’m hoping I could submit a few stories to come up with the cash or something. If you put your wishes out there for the universe, I believe there are ways for them to come true!
Meantime, it’s nice to dream of sunny beaches, adventures…living!
